How to sell a car online

Posted September 11th, 2010and last modified January 5th, 2012

More and more cars are being sold online these days as people from all over Australia are finding it a cost effective and successful venture.

This has also been made easier with the proliferation of car loans becoming more flexible in that many lenders allow for a potential buyer to be pre-approved.This gives the car buyer the knowledge of his or her credit limits and how much the different car loans would cost in repayments and interest charges.

If your car has become too unreliable or you simply want to upgrade, your family has grown or you want to change into a four wheel drive, a replacement is out there somewhere but you will want to be sure what car loans are available before signing on the dotted line.Much of this work was previously done by the car yard where you had brought your car but with online sales you will be responsible to arrange all this yourself.

To successfully apply for car loans, either online or through a bank, credit union, building society or finance company, you will have to be able to comply with the following requirements:

  • Be over 18 years of age.
  • Be a permanent Australian resident.
  • Earn at least $20,000 a year.
  • Be able to provide proof of income.

Most car loans start at about $5,000 and repayments can be made to suit your own individual ability to repay.

Selling a car online.

Online classifieds are the easiest way to sell your car on line. You can use more than the one online classified web site if you choose. Most sites will ask for you to pay the cost via credit card or PayPal for the space up front but you will have the sale exposed to the entire country. It will not be limited to your local area as would a classified placed in your local newspaper.

Online selling of your car is quite flexible as most sites will offer you a choice of taking out a free basic word only advertisement to a quite glamorous coloured photo of your car along with priority searches. You will find easy to follow steps that will guide you in what to say and how to download the photograph.

Make sure you get your price right in order to attract the right customers. There are sites online that will tell you the price you can expect to get for every make, model and year of manufacture, of all cars sold in AustraliaThey will also advise on what price to ask regarding condition and amount of kilometres recorded.

When writing your add make sure you mention all its good features, for example, new tyres, reconditioned engine, recent paint job etc.

Online car sales are quite straight forward but remember to include your name and contact details. You will also need to supply a registration number and expiry date. If the car is unregistered the engine number will suffice. It is also wise to be upfront and say if the car has a current roadworthy certificate or not.If not, say in the add what needs to be done to make it roadworthy.

If you are successful and the car is sold you will have to make arrangements for the buyer to inspect the vehicle at a mutual place and time. Before handing the keys over make sure any cheque is cleared as with any promise of a direct deposit.

Some car classified web sites will run your add continuously or until you ask for it to be removed, or remove it yourself.Others may give you a specific period after which it will be automatically withdrawn.Make sure you know which applies to your own particular add otherwise the cost of running the ad may build up.
